Our world is changing, it is warming up, and as we increase our energy usage, we release more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere and change our planet forever. Our atmosphere is what sustains life and it is being irrevocably changed by the increased release of greenhouse gases.

The science community has been sceptical of the notion of climate change. Nevertheless, as research has increased and awareness has been raised, the science community has become supportive and in fact agreed that climate change is a reality.

Climate change is causing the plant to become warmer, a marginal increase in overall temperature can cause destruction and hardship for hundreds of thousands of people every year - climate change is a reality and a scary one at that. An increase in temperature leads to the melting of glaciers and sea ice, rising sea levels, seasons changing and more extreme examples of abnormal weather patterns. The continuation of this trend will inevitably lead to drought, flooding, famine, war and a general destruction of our environment. more >
Renewable is energy supplied from renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar power, geothermal, hydropower and various forms of biomass. These energy sources are considered renewable sources because their fuel sources are continuously replenished. Renewable energy technologies include those that rely on energy derived directly from the sun, wind, geothermal, hydroelectric, wave or tidal energy, or on biomass or biomass-based waste products.

In simpler words, renewable energy is generated using resources that can never be used up. These energy sources are either infinite (the sun, wind and water) or constantly renewing, like municipal solid waste. These sources of energy do not rely on chemical reactions with natural gas, coal or oil.

Also, renewable resources are flexible and can be used in large-scale wind, solar electric power plants, or on the rooftops of residential and commercial facilities for electricity and water heating purposes. Renewable Energy is safe, sustainable and clean and is the only way for our plant to deal with its energy needs going forward.
Our energy consumption is mainly met using fossil resources. These resources are limited, being depleted and are controlled by a handful of countries. Political conflicts can cause supplier nations to withhold energy leading to drastic consequences for non supplier nations. The European Union currently imports in excess of 40% of its energy; this trend is increasing and worrying. Based on this, the only solution to this problem is to generate renewable energy using the natural resources that countries have such as wind, solar etc. Doing this could lead to countries becoming self sufficient and energy independent.
The 2008 World Energy Outlook report, published by the International Energy Agency, predicts that worldwide demand for energy consumption is set to grow. This report states that the majority of this demand will come from China, India and the Middle East. So what is causing this increased demand?
1) Increased Industrialisation in emerging markets - as these countries become more industrialised, they operate more business' which increases the demand for energy.
2) Increased Worldwide Wealth - as the world gets wealthier, consumers start to buy more luxury goods (air conditioning etc) which increases their energy needs and demand.
3) Globalisation - as the world´s economies become more interdependent and interlinked, trade increases. This leads to increased movement of goods and a subsequent increase in energy demand.
4) Increased Population - as the population increases, the demand for energy increases.
With all this increased demand and a depletion of fossil fuel resources, the only solution to this problem is to implement the generation of clean sustainable energy.
The only answer to resolve this problem is to combat the effect of climate change by finding more sustainable solutions to meeting our increased energy needs. The sustainability of fossil fuels from a natural resource and security point of view is questionable, but unquestionable is the manner in which our traditional energy supplies are delivered where two thirds of the energy generated can be lost to waste heat. The most disturbing fact is that clean, affordable, sustainable and proven solutions to this problem exist.

These new solutions are in fact quite old; nevertheless cost effectiveness and political pressure from mainstream energy generators have suppressed these technologies. Fortunately, world leaders have released how serious the issue of climate change is. With this, governments have deregulated energy markets and created various incentive programs to speed up the investment and use of renewable energy.

Scientia Solar has aligned itself with these policies and believes in the importance of having a movement to protect our planet. Scienta wants to be a key player in making this transition a reality. < back
